For sale is a rare and historically significant Blancpain Fifty Fathoms “BUND,” a tool watch created in the 1970s exclusively for the German Bundeswehr frogmen. Unlike standard Fifty Fathoms models, these military-issued examples were never offered to the public, making them highly sought-after by collectors. What distinguishes this version is its unconventional bezel design: because Bundeswehr divers used rebreathers, a traditional graduated dive scale was unnecessary. Instead, the bezel is strikingly minimal, with a plain insert free of numerals or minute markers.
The stainless steel case remains in excellent condition, showing honest wear from service use yet retaining its original chamfers and factory finish. The bezel displays expected signs of use but remains complete, with the characteristic crack in the Tritium triangle at 12 o’clock—a signature detail of these watches. The screw-down case back, engraved with its serial number and “BUND” marking, is also original, with wear consistent with its military past. The fixed spring bars are secure, and the watch is fitted to a NATO strap. The mineral glass is clear and free of scratches.
The glossy black dial is exceptional, with no cracks or blemishes, presenting beautifully. Under UV light, the original tritium on the dial, hands, and bezel briefly glows before fading, confirming its authenticity, with the lume showing minimal aging. Altogether, this Blancpain Fifty Fathoms BUND is an extraordinary piece of dive watch history that captures both military utility and collectible rarity.
